The NFV TigerHawk volleyball team utilized a strong serving game and kept the Blue Devils out of synch most of the night en route to a three-game sweep of its match on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

NFV jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first set behind Bailey Moser’s serving and forced West Central to call a timeout to regroup. The two teams played each other evenly the rest of the way, with the TigerHawks coming out on top, 25-22, in the opening set.

“We still have a tendency to make unforced errors that allow teams to stay close to us, so that is something we need to work to correct,” commented head coach Bruce Ehler.

Hanna Moser provided the serving in the second set with nine straight points, while the TigerHawks were able to hold West Central to one or two points on serves. The TigerHawks cruised to a 25-14 win in the second set, setting the stage for the sweep.

The trend continued in the third set, as all of the TigerHawk servers were able to put together nice runs. The third set ended with a 25-20 NFV win, and the sweep was complete. The TigerHawks also received some solid contributions off the bench from Jade Daughton, Rachael Coan, Erin Kurdelmeyer, Alisha McTaggart, Tomi Tash, Morgan Wolfs, and Jenna Eberhart during the match.

“It was nice to get everyone onto the court and see all of our players contribute to a win,” added Ehler.

Morgan Huinker led the TigerHawks with 10 kills, while Hanna Moser and Bailey Moser added four apiece. Shelby Lehmann also had two kills, along with four ace serves. Hanna Moser produced five ace serves, five digs, and 18 assists.

The win brought the TigerHawk season record to 7-4, with an overall game record of 17-14. NFV is now 2-1 in the UIC.

“We were aware that West Central would be missing their longtime head coach, Steve Niggemeyer, and we want to wish him a speedy a recovery,” related Ehler.

Coach Niggemeyer suffered an apparent heart attack on Monday, the day before the match. At this writing he has been released from ICU and according to school officials is doing better.

NFV was to travel to Clayton Ridge for its next match on Tuesday, Sept. 24, followed by a contest at home with Kee High on Thursday, Sept. 26.
