South Winn preps for Homecoming
The selection of a queen and king, a coronation ceremony, a parade, dance, and a South Winn Warriors versus St. Ansgar Saints football game will highlight South Winneshiek High School’s 2013 Homecoming.
The Student Council, which is in charge of the coronation and parade, selected the theme “Retro Video Games” for the parade floats.
Parents, alumni, and members of the community are invited to the coronation ceremony, which will take place in the high school gym 1:40-2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27. The 2013 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned by Morgan Kuennen and Dakota Hageman South Winneshiek’s 2012 Queen and King.
This year’s queen candidates are Leah Elsbernd, Courtney Humpal, Carlee Knutson, and Abby Phillips.
Leah is the daughter of Gary and Marie Elsbernd of Calmar. She has been a member of the CFSR and FFA programs for four years each and is a four-year athlete in volleyball, softball, and trapshooting.
Courtney Humpal is the daughter of Darryl and Michelle Humpal of Ridgeway. She has been an active member of the South Winn community with four years of volleyball, softball, track, FFA, SODA, and CFSR, and is a member of the National Honor Society. In FFA, Courtney has served as treasurer and vice president.
Carlee is the daughter of Ron and Amy Knutson of Ossian. Throughout high school, Carlee has participated in student government and speech for one year each, golf and the musical for two years, FFA and volleyball for four years, and 4-H for eight years. She also participates in choir and LYO. Carlee was named the 2013 Winneshiek County Beef Queen.
Abby is the daughter of Bruce and Wanita Phillips of Spillville. Throughout high school, Abby has participated in two years of softball and SODA and four years of track, basketball, and cross country.
King candidates Garrett Bohach, Logan Brincks, Brendan Hageman, and Trevor Schweinefus.
Garrett is the son of Mark and Barb Bohach of Spillville. Garrett works on the family farm and stays busy at school. He has been involved in football, basketball, track, and CFSR for four years; choir, the musical, and SODA for three years; and individual speech for one year. Garrett has been on the special honor roll for four years, and he is a member of the National Honor Society.
Logan Brincks is the son of Randy and Mary Brincks of Ossian. Logan works on the family farm and has been a Boy Scout for nine years and a 4-H member for eight years. He has participated in CFSR, FFA, and the musical for four years each and large group and individual speech for three years each. Logan is a member of SODA, National Honor Society, and Phi Theta Kappa. He serves as senior class president, 4H president, FFA president, and County Council president.
Brendan is the son of Milan and Deb Hageman of Ossian. Brendan works on the family farm and for R&D Dairy. Brendan is a member of National Honor Society and SODA. He has been on the honor roll throughout high school, and he lettered in baseball last year. He was involved in basketball and student government for one year each. He has participated in golf for three years, baseball for four years, and 4-H for eight years.
Trevor is the son of Doug and Shanna Schweinefus of Ossian. Trevor is a National Honor Society member and a SODA member. He has participated in cross country and football for one year each, basketball and golf for four years each, and baseball for five years.
The 2:45 p.m. parade will begin on the west side of the high school and will go north two blocks to Klimesh Ford. It will then turn right and proceed to East Main, where it will turn right and go south for two blocks, again turning right, traveling past St. Aloysius and then back to the high school.
The football team will play against the St. Ansgar Saints with kick-off at 7:30 p.m.
The Homecoming dance will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 8 to 11 p.m. in the high school gym.
All alumni, parents, and community members are invited to join the South Winneshiek students and staff in celebrating Homecoming 2013.
