NFV consolation bracket champs

TigerHawk VB 3-2 at BCLUW tourney

By Jerry Wadian

North Fayette Valley lost three volleyball games at home Tuesday, Oct. 8, to Sumner-Fredericksburg, currently ranked third in Class 2A. However, the TigerHawks had what coach Bruce Ehler termed, “the best sustained effort we’ve played all year.”

Saturday’s tourney at BCLUW saw NFV go 3-2, earning the consolation bracket championship.

According to Ehler, “The BCLUW tourney was, “a case of good new, bad news. The good news was we were the consolation bracket champs; the bad news was if we executed just a little bit better, we could have been the tournament champions.”

NFV beat Meskwaki in the first match, 21-7 and 21-15. However, the TigerHawks lost the next two matches. North Tama beat them, 21-19 and 21-16, and eventual champion BCLUW beat the TigerHawks 21-18, 15-21 and 19-17.

“We had our chances in both losses, but couldn’t finish,” Ehler explained.

In the consolation bracket, NFV won by sweeping two games each from Valley Christian (25-6 and 25-9) and East Marshall (25-19 and 25-18).

Individual TigerHawk Results

Huinker- 33 kills, 19 digs; B. Moser- 19 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces; H. Moser, 62 assists, 15 digs, 2 aces; Lehmann- 14 kills, 4 blocks; J. Koch, 13 digs.

NFV took S-F to the limit in game one Tuesday, Oct. 8, in West Union. However, tied at 24-24, a pair of unforced errors caused the TigerHawks to fall.

“It was our best one-game effort of the season,” noted Ehler. “We had chances, but couldn’t finish.”

The strong effort continued in game two, but according to Ehler, “Our passing did not hold up. We only managed four kills, two by Shelby Lehmann, in the set.”

NFV gave up a seven-point run in the middle of game three and could never catch up.

Ehler summarized the set by saying, “We need to execute the offense a little better, and all that starts with the initial pass.”

Despite the three-set loss, Ehler remained upbeat, stating, “One bright spot was our blocking; we had a total of 11 blocks! I think the match showed what is possible and the potential that is there for greater things down the road.”

Individual TigerHawk Results

Huinker- 6 kills, 6 digs, 1 ace; B. Moser- 5 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces; H. Moser, 3 assists, 17 digs, 3 digs, 4 blocks; Lehmann- 7 kills, 5 blocks.

Going into the final week of the season and the UIC tournament, NFV is 14-14 overall, and 4-3 in the UIC. The TigerHawks have a match record of 37-38.
