The Flower Pot blossoms in Calmar

“I just felt like I was supposed to be here,” shared Audrey (Novak) Hurd, owner of the new flower shop in Calmar.

On Monday, Nov. 25, the city of Calmar officially welcomed The Flower Pot to Maryville Street, right next to the Horse Shoe.

“It has been a great first week,” Hurd expressed. “The people of Calmar and surrounding communities have been stopping in all week to welcome me and to see what I’ve got going on in here.”

Hurd, who graduated from South Winn High School in 1987, recently moved back to northeast Iowa with her husband, Michael. After spending several years in Oklahoma and Georgia, the Hurds were ready to come home to be near their family.

Hurd began working with flowers when she was in high school and is continuing to enjoy her passion for them.
The florist is a certified as a Master Florist by the Georgia State Florist Association and will pursue the Master Florist certification from the Iowa Florists Association as well.

“As a Master Florist you learn everything you can about being a florist, from shape, delivery, presentation, to specific plant knowledge. There is so much more to it than some people might think,” Hurd said.

The local businesswoman also took part in competitive floral shows in Georgia.  Hurd took second place at the 2013 Burton Cup, an interpretive design competition in Georgia, as well as third place in the Designer of the Year competition.
Hurd looks forward to filling the shop with more merchandise in the coming weeks and is excited to be a part of the community again.

The Flower Pot will be available for personal flower orders, as well as funerals, weddings, and other special occasions.
