Services held Friday for W.U. native

Gerald D. Schroyer, 88, of Harrold, S.D., formerly of Arlington and West Union, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, S.D. 

Funeral services were held Friday, March 15, at Wadena Community Church in Wadena with Pastor Rusty Phillips officiating. 

Burial was in the Wadena Cemetery.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home of Elgin handled the local arrangements.

Gerald Donald “Jerry” Schroyer was born May 24, 1924, in West Union to Otto and Victoria (Stahl) Schroyer.  

He attended school in West Union.  

On Feb. 12, 1942, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Mississippi for his basic training.  He served a tour in the European War Theater and received an honorable discharge on Dec. 22, 1945.

On July 23, 1948, he married Artalee Phillips at the Presbyterian Church in Wadena.  To this union, a son was born.

Kaiser services set for Saturday

Paul Kaiser, 76, of West Union died Monday, March 11, 2013, at Manor Care Health Services - Utica Ridge in Davenport.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. 

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, rural West Union.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union. A rosary service will begin at 4 p.m.

Lois A. Schuchmann, 91


Services held for retired area teacher

A memorial service for Lois A. Schuchmann, 91, of West Union, formerly of Hawkeye, were held Monday, March 11, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

Inurnment followed in the West Union Cemetery.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home of Hawkeye and Iowa Cremation of Cedar Rapids assisted the family.

Lois Adeline (Kiel) Schuchmann was born Sept. 13, 1921, on a farm south of West Union in Fayette County.  She was the oldest child of Louis and Blanche (Stansberry) Kiel. 

Baptized in First United Methodist Church, Fayette, she became a communicant member of Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, on Oct. 12, 1945.

Lois graduated from Fayette High School in 1939 and earned her B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in 1965.  She took graduate classes from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and correspondence classes from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Funeral held for W.U. Class of ’39 graduate

L. Darlene Granger, 90, of West Union died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Traditions in West Union.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 8, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.

Burial was in the West Union Cemetery.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

L. Darlene (Wolfe) Granger was born March 6, 1922, to Philip H. and Ella (Baumgartner) Wolfe. 

She lived most of her life in the West Union area, graduating from West Union High School with the Class of 1939.

Darlene attended Iowa State University for three years before graduating from Iowa State Teachers College with a degree in home economics. 

After graduation, Darlene taught school in Waterville until her marriage to Wayne C. Granger on March 10, 1945.

Funeral services for J.C. “Bud” Jensen, 90, of West Union will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at United Methodist Church in West Union with the Rev. Scott Keele Kober officiating.

Burial will follow in the West Union Cemetery.

Visitation was set for Tuesday, March 12, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union, which is handling the arrangements.

Bud’s death occurred Friday, March 8, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Jens Christian Jensen Jr. was born May 13, 1922, to Jens Christian Jensen Sr. and Alice Mona (Cottier) Jensen at the family farm home in Windsor Township. He was named after his father, so he was always known by the nickname “Bud.” 

Bud was baptized Aug. 12, 1924, and became a member of United Methodist Church in 1938. 

He attended Windsor No. 1 country school through the eighth grade.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Holy Name

A Mass of Christian Burial for William “Bill” Strudthoff, 82, of Hawkeye was celebrated by the Rev. Dale Rausch on Saturday, March 9, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union.

Burial followed in the West Union Cemetery with military honors conducted by Arnold-Rogers American Legion Post 312 of Hawkeye.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union was in charge of arrangements.

Bill’s death occurred Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.

Former Elgin resident William Junior “Bill” Schupbach, 92, died at his home in Sun Lakes, Ariz., on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 15, at Chandler United Methodist Church in Chandler, Ariz., with the Rev. Jonathan Arnpriester officiating. 

Inurnment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. 

Born July 12, 1920, in Elgin, Bill was one of 12 children born to William Henry and Anna Rose (Fredriech) Schupbach. 

He graduated from Elgin High School and later from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, in 1949. 

After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, Bill then went on to teach and coach at Monona and Ackley. He spent the rest of his career as a sales representative for Valeron Corp. in Cedar Rapids, and Tawas City and Farmington Hills in Michigan. 


Roberta J. Chapman


Chapman death reported

Roberta J. Chapman, of Magnolia, Texas, formerly of Elgin, died of cancer on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. 

Roberta Jane Chapman was born in Elgin on Nov. 16, 1943. She was the daughter of Robert and Erma Jane Wilson. 

She graduated from Valley High School in 1961 and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree as a dietician.

Roberta worked as a dietician for 25 years.

  She was married to Hugh Chapman on May 6, 1977. 

She enjoyed community theater and bird watching.  She was also actively involved in the Lincoln County (New Mexico) sheriff's posse.

  Roberta was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, JoAnn Shaffer.

  She is survived by her husband, Hugh Chapman; two sons, Dan (Erin) and Larry (Terri); a grandson, Briley Robert; two granddaughters, Carlie and Cady; a sister, Kathy; and many other relatives.


Marilyn A. Frieden


Marilyn A. Frieden, 78, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., formerly of Farmersburg and Arlington, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis. 

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf. The Rev. Marshall Hahn officiated.

Inurnment was at Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona was in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn Ann (DeWitte) Frieden was born Nov. 17, 1934, in Manchester to Elon and Mary Ann (Chapman) DeWitte. 

She graduated from Arlington High School, Arlington, in 1952. Marilyn then worked at a bank until her marriage.

On April 28, 1954, she was wed to Milo William Frieden in Arlington. To this union six children were born. 

In addition to farming with Milo for many years, Marilyn also worked at Central Community Schools in Elkader.

Funeral held for Postville native

Vicki S. Post, 65, of Dubuque, formerly of Postville, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at her home.  

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 3, at Behr Funeral Home in Dubuque, which handled the arrangements.

A private family burial was held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
