Fox services held Monday in Fayette

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Fox, 86, of Oelwein, formerly of Randalia, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Oelwein Healthcare Center in Oelwein.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 3, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, rural Westgate.

Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein, handled the arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth (Woods) Fox was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Delaware County to John and Sadie (Burke) Woods.

She graduated from Randalia High School in 1945.

On Nov. 29, 1945, Betty and Sheldon Fox were married at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette. 

Betty was a farm wife and a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing and playing cards.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter, Debra Nefzger; a great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Don Woods and Paul Woods.

Funeral services held June 1 for Adaline Westendorf, 90

Adaline M. Westendorf, 90, of West Union died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, at United Methodist Church in West Union with the Rev. Scott Keele Kober officiating. 

Interment was in the Alpha Cemetery. 

 

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye was in charge of arrangements. 

Adaline Mae (McIntyre) Westendorf, daughter of William and Agnes (Sellers) McIntyre, was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Fayette County. 

She attended country schools in the county and received her G.E.D. in the early 1970s. 

On March 25, 1946, she was united in marriage with Gerald H. Westendorf at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. 

Over the years, Adaline had worked at Bealmer’s in West Union, a café in Hawkeye, assisted with elections, and worked for the Census Bureau.

Marie Tessmer services set for Thursday

Marie G. Tessmer, 91, of Clermont died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society – Postville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye. 

Interment will be at Alpha Cemetery. 

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the funeral home on Thursday. 

Marie Gertrude (Schuldt) Tessmer, daughter of Heinrich and Martha (Schmaedeke) Schuldt, was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Readlyn. She was baptized at home on the same day by the Rev. C. Meyer. 

She was confirmed April 5, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner by the Rev. C.J. Mardorf. 

Marie received her education in the Sumner schools, graduating from Sumner High School in 1939. She received business training in Waterloo after high school.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrated for Ft. Atkinson man

Sam Franzen, 86, of Fort Atkinson died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Nick March on Thursday, May 16, at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas.

Interment was in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Aloysius Schmitt American Legion Post 691 of St. Lucas and Helof Holm VFW Post 1977 of Decorah. Casket bearers were Mark Sweitzer, Joe Moellers, James Kroeger, John Hill, Gene Gordy, and Michael Bedard.

Arrangements were handled by Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Fort Atkinson.

Eligius John “Sam” Franzen was born on May 29, 1926, to Joseph H. and Johanna (Baumler) Franzen in the same Fort Atkinson home in which he died.  

He attended school at St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas.

Graveside services held for Marguerite Upham, 104

Graveside services for Marguerite O. Upham, 104, of West Union were held Saturday, May 18, at West Union Cemetery.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home of West Union was in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite’s death occurred Monday, May 13, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Until her death, she was believed to be West Union’s oldest living citizen.

Marguerite Olive “Rite” (Taylor) Upham was born May 4, 1909, in Springville to Fred Glen and Josephine (Dunbar) Taylor.

The oldest surviving member of the Springville High School Class of 1927, she attended her 80th class reunion in 2009.

In 1932, Marguerite married Dale L. Upham in Cedar Rapids. They welcomed their only child in October 1942.

A memorial service for Karen K. Sensor will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at Randalia United Methodist Church.

Karen died April 2, 2013, at her home in Harlingen, Texas. She and her husband, Donn, have spent their summers near Fayette for many years.

Former West Union man dies in Florida

John Leonard “Jack” Fencl, 69, of Palmetto, Fla., formerly of West Union, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013.

A committal ceremony with military honors will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery in Florida on Tuesday, May 28.

Born in West Union on Sept. 25, 1943, to Leonard and Marcella (Marty) Fencl, Jack had been a local resident for 25 years. 

A Viet Nam veteran, he was the recipient of a Bronze Star medal. Jack was retired from the United States Army as a master sergeant. He was active with VFW Post 9226 and American Legion Post 325, both in Ellenton, Fla. 

Jack’s parents preceded him in death.

Survivors include Cathy, his loving wife of 32 years; a son, John Fencl of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Amy (Jim) Clausen of West Union; three sisters, Judy Stevens and Joyce Landers of Paris, Tenn., and Jean Earle of Central City; and three grandchildren, Dalton, Trenton, and Madison.

Services held for Dustin Amdahl, 28

Dustin L. Amdahl, 28, of Kalispell, Mont., died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at his home.

A Celebration of Life service was held Saturday, May 18, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home and Crematory, Kalispell, with the Rev. Tim Bartholomew officiating.

Dustin Lee Amdahl was born Dec. 28, 1984, in Whitefish, Mont., to Gary and Deborah (Hutchens) Amdahl, formerly of West Union.

He attended schools in the Flathead Valley, graduating from Flathead High School.

Following high school, Dustin worked at Nickel Charlie’s, Jagz, Outback, Quiznos, Taco John’s, Lawn Care Services, and as a local DJ.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, snowboarding, skateboarding, basketball and football. He had a love for music, writing, mixing, rapping, singing, recording and performing in various clubs.

Preceding Dustin in death were his maternal grandmother, Gladys Hutchens, and an uncle.
